TROMBONE                                                                                    

Michael Parnell

Michael Parnell has been a member of the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" since 1992 and is currently Assistant Principal Trombone in the Concert Band. Prior to joining the band he was employed by Disneyland and Disney Studios in California. While in California, Michael studied with Bill Booth and Roy Main.

Michael has won first place in the National Trombone Solo Competition and the Midwest Educator's Artist Competition.

A highly versatile performer, Michael has performed professionally jazz, commercial, and orchestral music for over 25 years . He has performed with the Kansas City Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Virginia Pops, Orchestra of Virginia Beach, Arlington Symphony, and Fairfax Symphony. As a freelance commercial musician he was lead trombonist for the Walter Noona Big Band and has performed with jazz artists such as Frank Sinatra, Bill Watrous, Carl Fontana, and Clark Terry.

Michael received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Kansas where he studied with Dr. Stephen Anderson, and Thomas Ashworth. He also studied trombone with Dr. Milton Stevens and Joeseph Alessi. He received his Master of Arts in conducting from George Mason University and studied conducting with Anthony Maiello, Dr. Stan Englebretson, and Dr. Harlan Parker.

His studio experience included Americas Most Wanted, Visa commercials, Discovery Channel programs, Scarecrow and Ms. King. Movie credits include an appearance in The Next Karate Kid.  Michael composed the sound track for Life's Enduring Charms. He has orchestrated for National Public Radio's B.J. Leiderman.

Michael has been past conductor of the Dominion Brass, Falls Church Concert Band and has guest conducted with numerous high school and university band and orchestras.

As trombone instructor, Michael is dedicated to teaching his students to succeed as young performers. His mentoring has led students to the best conservatories and music schools in the United States. He annually has students participate in Virginia All State Band.
